Spiralic entanglements between song and dance from Renaissance France

A deep dive into the transfer of melodies between song and dance forms of mid-16th century France, explored in historical and original arrangements tracing the passing-down of melodies and forms over time. Incredibly dark but rich colour palettes, unique to this music, are enhanced by interweaving diminutions and improvisations. These elements are spun together and unravelled again as miniature sonic narratives in sets of song and dance suites.

Music found and connected in the collections of Pierre Attaignant (c.1494-c.1551), Jacques Moderne (1495-1562), and Simon Gorlier (c. 1550s). Featured composers include Claudin de Sermisy (c.1490-1562), Clément Janequin (c.1485-1588), Josquin des Prez (c.1450-1551), and Pierre Certon (c.1510-1572), among others.

A special feature of this programme is the the pioneering use of tenor and “bassett” flutes after 16th-century French flute-builder Rafi, specially built for Liane by Boaz Berney at the luxuriously low pitch of 392Hz, creating a unique and ethereal sound sphere.
