DIALOGUES

feat. the complete four part madrigals of Madalena Casulana, alongside works by Orlando di Lasso, Cipriano de Rore & Giorgio Mainerio

Vocal music without voices
Reweaving wild 16th century polyphony

Sadler & Conrad sing through their instruments, exploring the wild and progressive polyphony of Madalena Casulana (c.1540-c.1590) - the first woman to publish compositions under her own name. Through intimate and intricate interpretations of her music, featuring diminutions, special instrumental arrangements, and discant, tenor, or bass traverso in combination with lute, we enter into a type of dialogue with Casulana herself. Her complex and sonorous madrigals shine brilliantly alongside works by her contemporaries Cipriano de Rore and Orlando di Lasso, as well as dances by Giorgio Mainerio.

A “tender dialogue” [...] the team of Sadler & Conrad impress with their silent discussions and clear melodies. Some people keep their eyes closed during the concert to fully immerse themselves in the unusual sound world.
